Garrett reports that his international law prof banned laptops in the classroom. I've been known to play a few games of Snood on ye olde laptoppe, but I don't abuse it.
In fact -- because I don't have to worry about reading my handwriting later -- I can type what I want to remember from class, freeing myself from stenographer mode. I can't even remember what I've recorded when I'm scribbling down notes. Normally I only type up ideas as to what the professor is really getting at but never does (inevitably because some tool is wasting class time to hear himself speak).
I'd seriously drop the class if the professor banned laptops. I pay too damned much not to be in control of my educational experience.
Amen! We're stuck doing enough work offline already. Ideally the profession would see technological evolution as a *positive* thing.

Besides, discractions come in pen and paper form too. Remember the connect the dots game? What the hell was that called? Not as challenging as Free Cell, but still serves its purpose.
Personally, I can't stand laptops in class. My Constitutional law professor threatened to ban them, but hasn't yet. I hope he does...
Posted by: Robert on September 12, 2002 11:57 PMI think it probably depends on the school & the class. Most of my classes 75%+ use them. I can't read my own handwriting, so they are useful indeed. And besides you, I don't know of anyone who takes notes by hand that has a problem with them.
Besides, playing solitaire discreetly REALLY becomes a problem when you have to bring a deck of cards.
We did have a hard time rustling up a piece of paper to play dots today, but eventually we found one. See, no downside, either!
