I was horrified to hear the USPTO's plan to automate the administration of patents and trademarks includes the destruction of millions of documents. Not only are the current electronic archival systems buggy, the documents themselves represent an important historical and cultural resource. There's some interesting stuff to be considered here, like websites that want to prevent linking to anything but their homepage [deep linking], copyright, or even libel.
