Preach on my sister. My Torts prof. threatened to take away the laptop "privilege" as well. I need the type to read my notes and the spell check is mandatory for me.
Besides, discractions come in pen and paper form too. Remember the connect the dots game? What the hell was that called? Not as challenging as Free Cell, but still serves its purpose.
I think it probably depends on the school & the class. Most of my classes 75%+ use them. I can't read my own handwriting, so they are useful indeed. And besides you, I don't know of anyone who takes notes by hand that has a problem with them.
Besides, playing solitaire discreetly REALLY becomes a problem when you have to bring a deck of cards.
We did have a hard time rustling up a piece of paper to play dots today, but eventually we found one. See, no downside, either!
Amen! We're stuck doing enough work offline already. Ideally the profession would see technological evolution as a *positive* thing.

Personally, I can't stand laptops in class. My Constitutional law professor threatened to ban them, but hasn't yet. I hope he does...
